Notes on Andy Stein’s Medium post: family, career and community are separate paths toward meaning, and God is the point at infinity where they meet.
Thinking of God as the Vanishing Point at Infinity, by Andy Stein on Medium, 1 January 2022.
Searching for meaning and connection in anything bigger than oneself is a search for God. The post starts from years of treating God as about as likely as aliens hiding behind the moon, and from a lifelong search for meaning in family, career, hobbies and spiritual communities.
- The vanishing point. In a picture of a tree-lined road, the road, the trees and the brush are parallel lines that meet at a single vanishing point. Family, career and community are paths of that kind, and God lies where they meet, at infinity.
- Losing one path. A death, a lost job or a stagnant community hurts, but infinitely many other paths still lead toward the same point.
- The right direction. Living well means moving in the right direction at each moment, and a prayer can be a prayer for the wisdom to know what is right and the strength to do it. Seeing the end of the path is not needed.
